reading and discussing activity - reflection

I assigned my Elementary III English students the job of reading an interesting and short article about Culture Shock. The idea was to know about some points that Latin Americans should observe when visiting the United States,Canada and Northern Europe. One of my students, whose name is Ana Camila, read the whole article in three or four minutes, while it took 12 minutes for the others to read it, then she said: "I'm ready" and I told her it was important to read at least twice since the article has  losts of interesting vocabulary to check out, and she said again  "I'm ready". After that, we were looking into the unknown expressions. Suddenly, the expression "shaking hands" appeared and I asked her to explain me what the meaning of it was. she had no idea about it. So, I told her, that's reason I asked you for sussing out unknown expressions with your classmates or me.

After the reading, we were discussing some questions like: should you kiss North Americans only once on the cheeck? and stuff like that. She was one of participants during the discussion since she could understand all my English questions, but all her answers were in Spanish and she told me how difficult was for her to speak in English.

So guys, Knowing that she neither wanted to check the unknown vocabulary  nor read the article twice, do you think the problem she has, when answering in English, is a matter of laziness?

Also, I told her that she must speak , at least, with "crazy words". Guys, do you think is good for students to try to speak with "crazy" words, sentences and expressions, at least?

and why couldn't she answer my questions in English if she was able to get the English questions?

Thanks for your recommendations,
